The planet's rapid rotation drags a critical opening in its magnetic shield far from where it should be. The mission ended in 2017, but the data keeps producing new results.

Reanalysis of data from the Cassini spacecraft has produced an unexpected finding about Saturn's magnetic shield. The planet's rapid rotation appears to drag a key opening in its magnetosphere far towards the afternoon side, rather than to its expected position.

Openings in a magnetosphere are the regions through which particles from the solar wind can enter a planet's magnetic environment. The location of that opening directly determines where particle entry concentrates.

Although the Cassini mission ended in 2017, work on the dataset it collected continues. Reprocessing archive data with new methods makes it possible to draw fresh results from completed missions.

The lesson here is about method more than about Saturn: data from a mission that ended in 2017 is producing a new finding nine years later. Because the overwhelming share of cost in space science sits in the launch, reprocessing archive data with new methods is the most efficient lever available for lowering cost per result. Since the location of the magnetospheric opening determines where particle entry concentrates, it also forces a reinterpretation of the planet's aurorae and upper-atmosphere chemistry.
